Class 78 alumnus Gu Bo won the 2023 International Society of Optics and Photonics Meiman Laser Award

On January 11th, the International Society of Optics and Photonics (SPIE) announced the winners of the 2023 Society Award. Dr. Gu Bo, a Class of 78 alumnus of the School of Optoelectronics at Zhejiang University and a well-known figure in the laser industry, was awarded the 2023 SPIE Maiman Laser Award.

Gu Bo Graduated From The Department Of Optics And Electronics (now Known As The School Of Optoelectronics) Of Zhejiang University In 1982, Majoring In Laser Technology. He Was One Of The Earliest Chinese Graduate Students To Pursue A Doctoral Degree In The Field Of Laser Technology In The United States After The Reform And Opening Up. I Am Currently A COS Fellow Of The Chinese Optical Society, An OPTICA Fellow Of The American Optical Society, A SPIE Fellow Of The International Society Of Optics And Photonics, And A LIA Fellow Of The American Laser Society. In 2022, I Was Awarded The Arthur L. Schawlow Award By The American Laser Society.

Over The Past 30 Years, Dr. Gu Bo Has Made Many Groundbreaking Contributions To Laser Technology And The Laser Industry, Playing A Key Role In Developing Commercial Lasers And Laser Systems For Industrial Applications. Many Of The Products He Designed Are Still Operating In Manufacturing Plants Around The World. He Is One Of The Pioneers In The Application Of Laser Micro Nano Processing In Semiconductor Manufacturing, The World's First Designer And Manufacturer Of Solid-state Lasers For Space Satellites, And The Main Developer Of Ultrafast Laser Crystal Doped Titanium Sapphire. He Applied Laser Technology To Semiconductor Manufacturing, Solving The Bottleneck Of Several Generations Of Microelectronic Device Manufacturing.

Dr. Gu Bo Has Played A Key Role In The Development And Commercialization Of Fiber Laser Technology, Particularly In Fiber Laser Marking And High-power Fiber Laser Cutting, Welding, Cladding, And Additive Manufacturing, Paving The Way For The Widespread Application Of Fiber Laser Technology In The Sheet Metal Processing Industry Worth Billions Of Dollars. As Early As Twenty Years Ago, He Introduced Fiber Laser Technology Into China, Greatly Promoting The Development Of The Domestic Laser Industry And Greatly Improving The Level Of China's Laser Technology In The High-end Manufacturing Field. In 2012, Dr. Gu Bo Founded BOS Photonics With The Aim Of Developing Next-generation Optoelectronic Technologies And Products, Including New Generation Additive Manufacturing, And Combining Photonics Technology With Other Emerging Technologies To Pave The Way For Future Applications.

It Is Reported That The Meiman Laser Prize Aims To Recognize Individuals Who Have Continuously Made The Highest Level Of Contributions To The Science And Technology Of Laser Sources. It Is Named In Honor Of The Famous Physicist And Engineer Theodore H. Maiman, Who Was Widely Acclaimed For Inventing And Manufacturing The World's First Laser.
